BNI Sophomore is IN IT TO WIN IT

Bishop Noll Institute sophomore Brianna Ballesteros embodies the spirit of “in it to win it,” a phrase that serves as this year’s school motto. This determination, she said, stems from a desire to finish strong academically while maintaining her deep faith and pursuing personal passions.
“My mom always told me to finish what I started, but to also maintain the balance between my effort in my work, faith and passions in life," Ballesteros, of East Chicago and a parishioner of St. Casimir, said. "This has given me the confidence and determination to succeed in school.”
Faith plays a crucial role in her academic journey. “My faith has inspired me to excel academically by giving me the strength to accomplish my goals,” she said. Recalling a challenging freshman year final, she said prayer helped overcome self-doubt and ultimately achieve success (and an A).
Ballesteros appreciates the hands-on approach of her teachers. “If you’re struggling with things they’ll go out of their way to help you not only get the correct answers but also truly understand the material,” she said. This support has fostered her ability to seek help when she needs it.
Her theology teacher said Ballesteros always takes responsibility for her work.
“She asks questions in class to clarify what she does not understand,” Aaron Bellisle said. “She takes a stand for her faith even when she knows she will face backlash.”
English teacher Ed Watrobka praised Brianna, who is also a Service Club representative.
“Although Brianna has an A in class, she still tries to learn more. She has questions about her learning and understanding of the material, and she wants to know ways to improve her writing. This quality is rare for any student with a good grade, or not-so-good grade, for that matter. As a Service Club class representative, Brianna comes to all the planning meetings with a smile on her face and is ready to work. She puts her faith into action and wears her heart on her sleeve. She is a good person to have in class and out.”
Her chemistry teacher, Mary Koster, agreed that Ballesteros excels at overcoming challenges.
“She not only reaches out for help but also collaborates with peers, both seeking solutions and offering support to others,” she said.
Looking ahead, Ballesteros aims to maintain a high GPA while strengthening her faith through prayer and reflection.
“I plan to achieve these goals but also stay strong in my faith by not only spending time studying but also spending time praying to God for guidance through my journey of not just high school but also life.”
School counselor Michael Roggenkamp said, “Brianna is a strong and courageous student who diligently tackles every challenge, never shying away from opportunities to grow and succeed.”
Ballesteros’ advice to incoming freshmen: “Don't forget your own opinions and aspirations in things, stay strong in everything you believe in.”
Listening to music and spending time with her family are also important to her.
